Southern flounder is an iconic fish of North Carolina and the most valuable finfish for both commercial and recreational fishing interests in the state. From the adoption of the Fisheries Reform Act by the N.C. General Assembly in 1997 to the year 2019 commercial landings have decreased in North Carolina by 81%. This first webinar in our Current Affairs in Marine Fisheries web series is a panel discussion highlighting some iconic and valuable species in North Carolina and the history of fisheries management in the state. Devastating declines in our fisheries require urgent and immediate action and a new approach to managing North Carolina’s waters to protect the creatures and people who depend on them, now and for generations to come.
