Great news for weakfish-  from a very low (pretty much zero) population, stocks are expanding with "rapid colonization" to a point that "commercial exploitation" is now not only possible, but recommended.

Because the Northeastern Atlantic Coast of Europe does not allow shrimp trawling in important weakfish nursery areas.

Think about this!

A few weakfish fry in balast water from the Chesapeake Bay could have been the source of the inital weakfish population that is expanding in Europe.

...also note the discussion on natal homing in the research paper.  Yes NC shrimp trawlers, you have destroyed our fishery and are keeping it from recovery.  What you do in NC has a direct impact on NC fish as part of separate overlapping stocks on the east coast.

What would leaving 11-million 3" to 5" juvenile weakfish annually in NC's estuarine waters do for our weakfish population?

It would recover it in two to three years.

...don't believe me?  Read the study and see how a few eggs, fry and/or juveniles can start a population that can quickly expand in size and range.!ArHvxdSx-xlqgkFVqeaDIYxYGDVt" rel="nofollow -!ArHvxdSx-xlqgkFVqeaDIYxYGDVt
