KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Residents voiced their opposition to three proposed private/commercial shellfish leases for Myrtle Grove Sound at a public hearing at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher on Thursday night...

William S. Burrell, Salty Roots LLC — of which Burrell is an agent — and Michael Connolly applied to lease a total of 5.9 acres of water bottom and water column in the sound for oyster farms. Click here to see a map of the leases and lease numbers.

Gary Ahlberg with the Masonboro Island Club said in an email prior to the meeting that approval of the leases by the NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries would grant new rights to private companies and place value of commercial interests over public rights and interests.

On Thursday night, Ahlberg compared allowing the shellfish leases to installing barnyard elements along scenic routes.

“This is an area that just has unparalleled beauty and fantastic, valued resources for everybody," he said. “We wouldn’t put chicken coops on the side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Why would we line our shorelines with black plastic oyster cages? It doesn’t make any sense.”

DEQ said it would take the public’s comments into consideration.

Ahlberg said if the leases are denied, the club will move forward with plans for the first sailing and waterman’s center in the Myrtle Grove area. He added that club members are encouraged by the trend in the shellfish growers' industry of focusing on open water in the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds and away from developed areas along the Intracoastal Waterway.

I wonder whoms monies are "promoting" "interests" for the Pamlico & Albemarle sounds in these comments..

The FIrst Sailing & watermans  center, sounds like a left wing Left Gay club.. (seriously)..Wink
