Spanish on the Fly
By Bryan Goodwin Native Guide
Spanish Mackerel fishing around the inlets is on fire right now. My client on Wednesday was set on catching Spanish on his fly rod. Mike, an avid Fly Fisherman from Montana, made the best of surface busting Spanish! Special thanks to Chuck L. for the early morning location tip on the fish. My "circle of fishing friends" sure does come in handy and certainly saves time when it comes to locating fish. For those looking for Spanish, no worries, just get out early and look for the boats! I felt kind of "out of place" fishing right smack dab in the middle of the trolling fleet but I was determined to put Mike in the "meat" of the schooling Spaniards. Although Mike didn't have the casting distance he had 10 years ago, his passion for the Fly rod and catching fish more than made up for any deficiencies. His home-tied flys almost perfectly matched the micro baits the Spanish were feeding on which helped make strikes plentiful. We finished the morning session with over 12 Spanish landed on the fly and one worn out fly fisherman! Enjoy the pics........
