Wrightsville-Kings & Spanish On Fire!!!
By Whipsaw Charters
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH - Left out of Masonboro early Sunday morning with some good old boys from Monroe. Bass fishermen that have only been in the ocean on a headboat. I don't think they knew what to expect.
First put lines in at the north jetty and trolled the beach north. (planers with gold clarkspoons and 1 shad colored yozuri) Got a few 1-2# Spanish, but felt it should be better than this. No birds. Saw a lot of boats around the Liberty Ship and did not want to get into that crowd, so went 1.6 miles East of the ship and lines back in. Great bite. 60-70 fish in around an hour. Got our first "beach king"--9 # on a yellow 6" yozuri. Released all but 30 from 1.5-3 lbs. These old boys are having a blast by now.
Next stop was the 200/200. Put out Hank Browns with Cigars. Nothing on top, but good bite on the downriggers set around 60 feet. Pretty water, 71 degrees, with a 2-3' chop. After 5-6 fish, pulled up and headed further East.
Next stop was a live bottom Brent Stanley and I found 3 years ago near the Cripple Rock. The King bite here was as good as it gets. No more than 10 minutes between bites. Limited out in no time. Blue or Pink skirts seamed to work best. After catching their limit, I tell these guys that I can go another 6-8 miles and get them on some dolphin, but they said no--"let's keep catching these Kings. Fine with me. Also told them that there had to be some grouper on that coral floor, but they were not intersted. I did "sneak" a line down with a single hook rig w/ a piece of a cigar for bait and pulled up a nice Red Grouper on the first drop, but these guys wanted to hear some more reels scream. I lost count at 25 Kings, but a lot of catch and release. I may have found some folks that love King fishing as much as me...Nah
Headed back in around 3 with some nice following seas. The ramp actually was not that bad, except for the nut-case jet ski's. Great day to be out fishing.
Good Luck, and be Safe,
Midnight
