Morehead City Catfish Were Hungry

By Bill "Catfish" Price

MOREHEADY CITY - Because of the great weather today, instant fishin' fever got a strangle hold on yours truly and fellow fishin' fanatic and good friend Bill Price of Atlantic Beach this afternoon. Not having our surf gear in shape just yet we decided to just grab up a couple of ultralight spinning rigs and go try our secret catfish hole on the edge of Morehead City for a little while this afternoon. We caught a couple of bluegills and prepared some cut bait. We had planned to stay till the dusk feeding frenzy but the coolers became too heavy for our liking long before twilight so we called it a day early. Using only #2 wire hooks with no weights we were still able to cast far enough because of the light line and ultralight rigs so we let the bait sink slow and we just twitched it around a bit.

Well, the channel cats (all in the 2-3lb range ... tasty!) were cooperative so we were at least able to get a bit of relief from fishin' and cabin fever until we can get our surf gear back in shape and hit the beach.

We're happy ... we'll be eating smoked catfish for the foreseeable future ... and I got quite a bit of skinning and cleaning to do so I better run and do the dirty work and cut us some green hickory bits for the Brinkman.
