Boats/Rods and Reels STOLEN
Thieves Strike Carteret County Waterfront
"....they just found my boat adrift on Taylor's creek in Beaufort. They thought I had drown!!!"
NCW member Rich Broughton reports
Spent 3 days over holidays on the Little Alligator stripper fishing with some friends. Caught many small fish, only one keeper, about 4 lb er. Returned boat to marina in Morehead around 4:30pm on New Years Eve. Got up on 1-1 and asked wife to go fish for some trout. She made it to the marina but decided not to go due to the light breeze. Sadly she returned home. I got my gear out of my fishmobile and started down to the dock & my boat. What did I find but no boat. Slip empty.
Some tuna boaters living on their boat next to mine said the the marina owner had put my boat away in dry stack late on the previous day. Hummmm don't seem right but I decided to call owner and verify. When what to my wondering ears should appear but in coming call from the Coast Guard dear. They said they were glad they had found me because they just found my boat adrift on Taylor's creek in Beaufort. They thought I had drown!!! Sheriff notified and asummed I was gone!!!!! They contacted my wife to notified that I must had fallen out my boat. Dead and gone--wife crys!!! Dry those eyes Sweetheart. She starts thinking about time line--- 9am at marina with me, 9:25 sheriff notifies her of discovery. That's efficiency. In 25 minutes I take boat out--fall out-- Coast Guard finds boat notified Sheriff- Sheriff drives to my house with bad news. Just could not happen. Good news is -- I'm alive. Some one stole boat during night--probably a night of heavy drinking-- went to Beaufort for proper New Years celebrations. Only loss was my new Garmin 540 and XM Sat receiver ant. Property can be replaced. I'm alive. Hope the nice people who stole my boat had a good time. Your day will come.
It did screw up my day of fishing.
Captain Joe Shute responds: "Rich, they stole your boat to use as a vechile to steal many 130 rods and reels off of tuna boats at portside marina and boats tied up on the Beaufort waterfront. I have had 3 different boat owners come into the shop today and inform me that their equipment was stolen. One of the mates worke up early to see your boat slipping away from their boat. All they could read was Carolina Girl on the side of the boat. If these guys catch up to the guys that stole your boat and their tackle, they are going to use them for harpoon practice!
