President Bush's Aim To Protect NC Fish Earns Criticism
WITN-TV7 Go to the NCW Message Board To Listen To the President's Address & Read The Transcript!
A President Bush wants to protect North Carolina's state fish, but his plan is earning criticism from state officials. In his radio address planned for this weekend, Bush plans to
encourage more recreational fishing in state waters. He'll also announce rules to limit commercial fishing of red drum and another overfished species, striped bass.
The address coincides with a fishing trip by the president to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
Louis Daniels, director of North Carolina's Division of Marine Fisheries, says the new rules will have minimal practical effect on fish stocks, and will just inflame tension between recreational anglers and commercial fishermen.
